Product Description

Thick Ground Cover These gazanias are well-branched plants that grow quick and low, making them an excellent ground cover. Gazania (Gazania Rigens New Day Red Shades) These gazania plants bloom profusely and add vivid color to flower beds or containers! Also called Treasure Flower, Gazania plants look wonderful grouped in clusters for a mass bedding ground cover, but can also planted in hanging baskets or in patio containers. Gazania rigens is a native of South Africa, and it needs full sun and soil that drains well. Gazania is known to re-seed, and it blooms profusely from summer through fall in cooler climates, and fall, winter and spring in hot climates. Gazania care includes deadheading the spent flowers to promote the growth of more blooms. Gazania plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season. Water Treasure Flower plants slowly and deeply and let them dry out in-between waterings, as they are quite drought tolerant. Applying an organic mulch around the base of the plants helps to retain moisture. Fast-Growing Perennial How To Grow In colder climates, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last expected frost. Seeds should be pressed into soil but not covered: light is needed for germination. Keep seeds moist until germination. After germination, reduce watering and grow seedlings in a sunny window location. For warmer climates, seeds can be started directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed after frost danger. Deadhead spent blooms to promote growth of more flowers. Plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season. Product Features

This gazania is a surefire winner in any flower bed due to its visual appeal and continual dependability. It boasts 3 inch mahogany flowers on a compact 10 inch plant which will also spread 10 inches. The large, daisy-like flowers come in a variety of colors (this one is called Mahogany) and are held above the basal foliage, forming a bright carpet of color when planted in large masses.

Gazania is a low growing, perennial ground cover only reaching 10 inches in height growing in USDA zones 8 - 11.

Gazanias are good plants for the front of sunny garden borders and also perform well as a flowering ground cover when planted in large groups. Because of their heat and drought tolerance, gazanias are especially useful near driveways and sidewalks. They also do well in mixed container plantings.

Gazanias are considered annuals in the north; however, in the warmest areas of the country, such as southern Texas and parts of California, they're short-lived perennials, usually not lasting more than a few years. If you deadhead the flowers and toss them where you want more, they will re-seed readily from their flower seeds. Gazania is a tough little plant that prefers full sun, will tolerate all soils and thrive with moderate watering.

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per plant. It will bloom profusely through fall, winter and into late spring in the south, then flower intermittently during the hottest months of summer before bringing forth another profuse flowering in the fall.
