(Mirabilis jalapa) Discovered by the Conquistadors of the 16th century and subsequently named "Marvel of Peru," Four O'clocks are a tropical-looking flower with vibrant blooms in shades of pink, fuchsia, yellow, and white. As the name suggests, the flowers usually open in the late afternoon or evening, remaining open all night and closing the following morning. Fragrant blooms are attractive to pollinators and especially alluring to hummingbird moths. Tender perennial usually grown as an annual. 2-3' tall. Can self-seed in mild climates. Blooms mid-summer to fall. Sun to part shade. 25 seeds per packet. CULTURE: After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds 1/4" deep, 9-12" apart in a prepared garden bed. Thin to one plant every 18-24" apart after germination has occurred (7-10 days). Supply with moderate moisture throughout the growing season.
