(Brassica oleracea) An heirloom variety introduced in the 1930's by the Virginia Truck Experimental Station. Compact, slow-bolting plants produce large, blue-green leaves with a mild, cabbage-like flavor that sweetens with frost. Thick, slightly crumpled leaves are excellent for boiling or sauteing. Grows approximately 2' tall. 60-80 days to harvest. 100 seeds per packet. CULTURE: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors as soon as soil can be worked, spacing plants 18-24" apart in rows 36" apart. Plants will benefit from a heavy dose of well-composted manure. Floating row covers and biological controls are effective tools to protect against damaging insects.
