How To Grow Marigolds from Seed For best results, start with a pot or tray with damp potting mix. - Sprinkle a thin layer over the seeds and cover the pot or tray with plastic wrap. - Marigolds do not require light to start germinating so just place them in a warm spot. Usually, marigolds will take 3-4 days to germinate but may take longer in cooler areas. - After the seeds germinate, place the seedlings in an area where they will receive at least 5-6 hours a day of light and remove the plastic wrap. - Once the seeds have 2 sets of leaves, you can transplant them. If growing your marigolds directly in the ground, cover your seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. Thin seedlings to 8-18 inches apart after seedlings sprout.
