Delightful Ground Cover These gazanias are well-branched plants that grow quick and low, making them an excellent ground cover. Gazania (Gazania Rigens Kiss Orange) Perfect as a ground cover, gazania seeds grow quickly and the plants bloom profusely! Gazania treasure flower boasts 3 inch orange flowers on compact plants that reach 10 inches in height and 10 inches in width. Gazania flowers are held above the basal foliage, forming a bright carpet of orange when planted and grown as a ground cover plant. Gazanias are good plants for the front of sunny garden borders and also perform well as a flowering ground cover when planted in large groups. Because of their heat and drought tolerance, gazanias are especially useful near driveways and sidewalks. They also do well in mixed container plantings, pots, baskets, and window boxes. Gazanias are known for closing their flowers at night and on cloudy days, but this kiss series produces blooms that stay opened more often for frequent enjoyment! Fast-Growing Ground Cover How To Grow In colder climates, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last expected frost. Seeds should be pressed into soil but not covered: light is needed for germination. Keep seeds moist until germination. After germination, reduce watering and grow seedlings in a sunny window location. For warmer climates, seeds can be started directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed after frost danger. Deadhead spent blooms to promote growth of more flowers. Plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season. Plant Specifications Season: perennial USDA Zones: 8-11 Height and width: 8-10 inches Bloom color: orange Environment: full sun Moisture: keep seeds moist until germination Soil: well-drained with pH 5.8-6.8 Sowing rate: 100 seeds cover 10 sq. ft. This gazania is a surefire winner in any flower bed due to its visual appeal and continual dependability. It boasts 3 inch orange flowers on a compact 10 inch plant which will also spread 10 inches. The large, daisy-like flowers come in a variety of colors, but this orange is a show stealer.
Gazania grows as a perennial in USDA zones 8 - 11.
Flowers are held above the basal foliage, forming a bright carpet of color when planted in large masses. Kiss gazanias are good plants for the front of sunny garden borders and also perform well as a flowering ground cover when planted in large groups.
Because of their heat and drought tolerance, Kiss gazanias are especially useful near driveways and sidewalks. They also do well in mixed container plantings. Gazanias are considered annuals in the north; however, in the warmest areas of the country, such as southern Texas and parts of California, they're short-lived perennials, usually not lasting more than a few years.
Sowing Rate 2 - 3 seeds per plant. If you deadhead the flowers and toss them where you want more, they will re-seed readily from their flower seeds. Gazania is a tough little plant that prefers full sun, will tolerate all soils and thrives with moderate watering. It will bloom profusely through fall, winter and into late spring in the south, then flower intermittently during the hottest months of summer before bringing forth another profuse flowering in the fall.
